Timus Connect – Automatic Updates and Troubleshooting Guide

Overview

Timus Connect automatically checks for available updates every 6 hours and supports silent automatic updates, allowing updates to be downloaded and installed in the background without requiring user interaction.

The update process is managed by timus-helper-service, which runs as a system service on Windows and macOS.

Administrators can centrally configure and enforce automatic updates through Timus Manager → Agent Configuration → Agent Profile, ensuring that users cannot disable automatic updates.

This article explains how automatic updates work, how to configure and enforce them, what behavior to expect during installation, and how to troubleshoot common update-related issues.

1. How Automatic Updates Work

Silent Automatic Updates

Timus Connect supports silent background updates to keep devices up to date with the latest improvements, security enhancements, and bug fixes while minimizing user involvement.

Key behaviors:

  • Automatic Update Checks: Timus Connect checks for available updates every 6 hours.
  • Silent Background Installation: Available updates can be downloaded and installed automatically in the background.
  • No Manual Intervention Required: Users do not need to manually initiate updates when automatic updates are enabled.
  • Service-Based Updates: The update process is managed by timus-helper-service.
  • Centralized Management: Administrators can configure and enforce automatic updates through Timus Manager.

Silent automatic updates help maintain consistent application versions across managed devices and reduce the need for manual installations.

Manual Update Installation

In scenarios where Timus Connect displays an update notification with a Close and Install option, users can manually initiate the installation.

After installation, Timus Connect may need to be reopened manually.

This behavior does not necessarily indicate an update failure.

2. Configure and Enforce Automatic Updates in Timus Manager

Administrators can centrally manage and enforce automatic updates through Agent Profiles.

To ensure automatic updates remain enabled and cannot be disabled by end users, configure the following settings.

Configuration Steps

  1. Sign in to Timus Manager.
  2. Navigate to Agent Configuration → Agent Profile.
  3. Select the Agent Profile assigned to the relevant users or devices.
  4. Under the Windows settings:
    • Auto-Update: Enable this option.
    • Users Can Modify: Uncheck the checkbox located directly next to the Auto-Update setting.
  5. Under the macOS settings:
    • Auto-Update: Enable this option.
    • Users Can Modify: Uncheck the checkbox located directly next to the Auto-Update setting.
  6. Save the Agent Profile changes.

Recommended Configuration

Setting Windows macOS
Auto-Update Enabled Enabled
Users Can Modify (Auto-Update) Unchecked Unchecked

Why Should "Users Can Modify" Be Unchecked?

The Users Can Modify checkbox is located directly next to the Auto-Update setting in the Agent Profile.

When this checkbox is selected, end users can modify the Auto-Update setting locally.

To enforce automatic updates, the Users Can Modify checkbox must remain unchecked.

This prevents end users from disabling automatic updates in Timus Connect and ensures that the configuration remains enforced through the assigned Agent Profile.

With this configuration, Timus Connect checks for updates every 6 hours and can download and install available updates silently in the background without requiring user interaction.

Recommendation: Apply this configuration to all relevant Agent Profiles to ensure consistent automatic update enforcement across managed Windows and macOS devices.

3. Automatic Update Requirements

For Timus Connect to successfully check for, download, and install updates, verify the following requirements.

Update Server Accessibility

The device must be able to communicate with the Timus Connect update server:

https://repo.timuscloud.com/connect/update/

Ensure that firewall rules, proxy configurations, DNS filtering, or other network security controls are not preventing access.

Timus Helper Service

Ensure that timus-helper-service is running on the device.

This service is responsible for managing the update process.

If the service is stopped or not functioning correctly, automatic updates may fail.

Antivirus and Endpoint Protection

Verify that antivirus or Endpoint Protection Platform (EPP) solutions are not blocking:

  • The Timus Connect updater.
  • Downloaded update files.
  • The Timus helper service.
  • Connections to the Timus update server.

File and Directory Permissions

The update process requires appropriate permissions to download, access, and execute installation files.

Insufficient permissions may prevent updates from completing successfully.

4. Timus Connect Does Not Reopen After "Close and Install"

Symptoms

The user receives an update notification, clicks Close and Install, and notices that Timus Connect does not automatically reopen after installation.

Explanation

This is expected behavior and does not necessarily indicate an update failure.

Timus Connect updates are managed by timus-helper-service, which operates as a system service.

Windows and macOS restrict system services from directly launching graphical applications within a user's interactive session.

As a result, Timus Connect may not automatically reopen following an update initiated through Close and Install.

Resolution

Once the installation is complete, manually reopen Timus Connect.

Note: Silent automatic updates are designed to reduce the need for manual installation and user interaction. The behavior described above applies when an update is initiated through the Close and Install option.

5. UpdateError-00** During Installation

Symptoms

An update fails during the download or installation process, and the user receives an error message similar to:

UpdateError-00**

Explanation

This error generally indicates that Timus Connect was unable to download or execute the required update files.

Possible Causes

1. Antivirus or Endpoint Protection Interference

Antivirus and EPP solutions may identify downloaded update files or executables as suspicious and block their execution.

2. Update Server Connectivity Issues

Firewall restrictions, proxy configurations, DNS filtering, or network connectivity issues may prevent communication with the Timus update server.

3. Insufficient File Permissions

The updater may lack the necessary permissions to download, access, or execute files within the update directory.

4. Timus Helper Service Issues

If timus-helper-service is stopped or not functioning correctly, the update process may fail.

6. Troubleshooting Steps

Step 1 – Verify Agent Profile Configuration

First, confirm that automatic updates are enabled in the Agent Profile assigned to the affected device.

Navigate to:

Timus Manager → Agent Configuration → Agent Profile

Under the relevant Windows or macOS settings, verify that:

  • Auto-Update is enabled.
  • The Users Can Modify checkbox directly next to Auto-Update is unchecked.

Save any necessary changes.

Important: If Users Can Modify is checked, end users may be able to disable automatic updates locally. Keep this checkbox unchecked to enforce the configured update policy.

Step 2 – Verify Update Server Connectivity

Confirm that the affected device can communicate with:

https://repo.timuscloud.com/connect/update/

If connectivity fails, investigate potential restrictions involving:

  • Firewall policies.
  • Proxy configurations.
  • DNS resolution or filtering.
  • Network connectivity.
  • Endpoint security software.

Note: An unsuccessful response when opening the URL in a browser does not necessarily indicate a connectivity failure. Verify DNS resolution and HTTPS connectivity to the update server.

Step 3 – Verify Timus Helper Service

Ensure that timus-helper-service is running on the affected device.

This service manages the update process on Windows and macOS.

If the service is stopped or not functioning correctly, investigate its status and any related operating system errors.

Step 4 – Review Antivirus and Endpoint Protection

Check whether installed antivirus or EPP solutions are interfering with the update process.

Review security logs for blocked or quarantined activities involving:

  • Timus Connect.
  • The Timus Connect updater.
  • timus-helper-service.
  • Downloaded update files.
  • Connections to the Timus update server.

If necessary, temporarily disable the relevant protection feature during a controlled troubleshooting session and retry the update.

Important: Re-enable all security protections immediately after testing.

If security software is confirmed as the cause, configure an appropriate exception according to your organization's security policies.

Step 5 – Verify Update Directory Permissions

Timus Connect uses the following directories to store downloaded update files.

Windows

%LOCALAPPDATA%\timus-updater

To access the directory:

  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Enter %LOCALAPPDATA%\timus-updater.
  3. Press Enter.

macOS

~/Library/Application Support/Caches/timus-updater

To access the cache location, open Terminal and run:

cd ~/Library/Application\ Support/Caches && open .

This opens the cache directory in Finder.

Verify that:

  • The update directory is accessible.
  • The appropriate account or service has the required permissions.
  • Security software is not blocking downloaded files.
  • Update files are not being quarantined or prevented from executing.
